The fine art of inertia

Doesn’t inertia sound so much nicer than “lazy”? or “bored”? or “can’t get my ass in gear”?

I managed to start off today well by hitting my favourite gym class as I try to on Monday mornings. I count on it to anchor my week in some kind of goodness – activity, which is often followed by being inspired to eat a few carrot sticks, closely followed by the hope that I can sustain my efforts all week long.

Unfortunately my mind did not get the memo and instead of launching into goodness and action I succumbed to that dreaded inertia. Lingering mindlessly on social media (it is like getting sucked into a vortex where the pull is so strong), reading some blog posts (rather than writing them), taking a very long shower (in my empty and quiet house), and finally reaching rock bottom where I paid some bills and ordered the kids school supplies so I could at least tick stuff of my short to-do list.

Do you have days like that where you simply cannot get any momentum going? It feels like the perfect day to stay in your PJs, read books or watch favourite DVDs. Sometimes we can indulge in those days, but other times we have to push through. Something might be due or little people around need us or maybe we already gave in to the PJ day yesterday…

All I can say is do something – start with those baby steps like paying bills online or find the easiest thing on your to do list and get it done. It does not have to be the most important or the sexiest item – the trick here is to get yourself moving. Reward yourself after you get some stuff done and dangle another carrot in front of yourself as needed (the good reward kind rather than the healthy snack kind).

Promise yourself that DVD after you nail two things on your list.

Go for a walk and get some fresh air after you tackle Mount Washmore so your kids have clean undies.

Curl up in bed with your book / pinterest / ipad after you clear your backlog of emails.

I am off to reply to emails from last week right now and then I will indulge in both varieties of carrots. Here’s hoping tomorrow I wake up feeling a little more active and motivated. If not I have a whole list of rewards ready to go starting with some music downloads.

What do you do when you get stuck in the land of inertia? How do you get momentum going on days you can’t give in to nothingness?

Find your simple,

Deb

That’s me most days, however I have just recently found a strange burst of energy to get everything done. This is resulting in early nights and early mornings and even more stuff done but less social media and blogging. I find the less I do, the less I want to do and it just keeps going… It really is sometimes about pushing yourself, hope this inertia leaves you soon Deb, perhaps the changes in your household are affecting you more than you realise? x

There are those days where I feel all I want to do is just sit on the couch or sleep. But usually once I’m out of the house I’m ok so I tackle outside errands like groceries, and leave the in-house chores to when I’m feeling up to it. Or until hubby helps out haha

I think getting out of the house / change of scenery is great – maybe that’s why the next day shifted – i did the gym, but then errand before getting home.

I like the advice of a DVD… definitely going to tick things off my list this morning before sitting on that couch… once I get off the computer :)

I feel like this far to often, and as for the P.J’s thing, we live in our’s on days we don’t have to be anywhere.

That’s the great thing about the lack of get up and go happening on a day you have nowhere to be – you can give in and enjoy it (or at least let it pass in its own time)

Usually, this is not me (I’m usually the busy, buzzy somewhat stressy one!), but the last few days it has been, and here I am feeling totally like I’m stuck right now! Coffee may not be the healthiest solution, but it’s my no 1 to try, along with period pain drugs for right now, & easing up on myself. It’s OK, we got out to playgroup this morning, anything else for the rest of the day is a bonus.

I hope you are in gear again now but otherwise easing up on yourself sounds like a good plan! xxx

I find I’m much more productive on the days I jump on the treadmill. I tend to be able to keep the momentum going for a good while after a workout. The other days are harder though. Those are the days I write a to-do list, ticking things off (however small) and then rewarding myself with one of my favourite tv shows.

Oh it’s sooo hard! Inertia should be my middle name. I do the little rewards thing. Most days I feel the only way I get things done is by baby steps!

Hope you are full of enery & motivation tomorrow xx

Thanks Rach – I hope your energy improved – funny enough the next day was the total opposite and flowed with ease. So annoying when it happens but thank god it is not every day!

I get sucked into the blog reading too! One always leads to 10 and then I really need to get off the computer and do something else!
