I took up the “Pinterest make me challenge”

We all know this is not a craft blog so you might be wondering why I am sharing a craft project… Well, today is the day I usually write about personal development and my decision to join the craft link up was not a simple one and I figure I have something to say about it that you might relate to. I hope those from the craft linky will bear with me for a little self reflection and those here to challenge themselves to grow will take the lesson, if not the craft.

I love the internet – I have always been an information junkie, a reading maniac and love browsing magazines. Pinterest is like the ultimate match up for a person like me – especially since I am a visual person.

Long before pinterest came along I was bookmarking ideas all over the place. How many of those ideas did I act upon? Maybe 20 over the years (that does not count recipes which I actually do follow through on).

When I saw the Kirsty and Alyce were running a linky to actually push people to make the things they were pinning I took it as a personal challenge. As a perfectionist I think I struggle with taking on projects because I always felt they had to come out the same as the pictures. As someone who did not grow up learning to sew I am slowly finding my feet (and then stopping again). Do you do the same thing? Drool over images, wish you could make them and then tell yourself you can’t do it? It won’t be “good enough”. It is “too hard”. What if you mess up that beautiful fabric you bought? What if you break your sewing machine?

I am here to tell you it all comes down to our language and approach. I had a breakthrough earlier this year when setting up the blog. I was reading a post on the blog Cloud Coach that woke me up to myself. Ethan mentioned how our attitude manifests our reality. I was guilty of saying “I am not a tech person” over and over as I struggled to figure out blogging. After I read his article  I stopped myself any time I used that excuse. I am doing it now with the crafting. I always say I am non-crafty and I realise that will never change unless I change my attitude and approach. So – as I said on Facebook over the weekend- I urge you to step outside your comfort zone, accept progress on something without expecting perfection and just dive into something that excites you.  Just as I stopped saying “I am not a runner” when I ran 7km, I am going to stop defining myself negatively on any subject. I may never sell a crafted item or cook up a 5 star meal, but that does not make me non-crafty or a non-cook. Stop defining yourself into a corner!

So here is my Pinterest inspiration:

I found this advent calendar on pinterest that I included in my round up ages ago

I dug my sewing machine out of storage where it had sat since we moved 11 months ago. I managed to thread the bobbin and thread the machine correctly (yay), but when I went to sew it all together I made a complete mess of the test fabric. I did not know what was wrong (but a friend came by today and I now know I had it on the button setting accidentally). Anyway, in the moment  I decided to carry on and used no sew hemming tape to further illustrate that sometimes you just have to do it and move on. I hand stitched the pockets. The whole thing is slightly wonky and screams “newbie” crafter, but I assume my kids will be excited with my result and won’t notice the uneven hems or any number of imperfections. I thought about what my aim was – not a perfect advent calendar (I could have bought one if that was what I wanted), but something homemade by me for my family! From that perspective I achieved something great!

Here is my version:

Now to decide how I want to number the pockets, write out my advent activities on the cute tags I used and plan when we will do each thing. I love how this layout with pockets helps me plan ahead, but have the flexibility to just move them around.

Have you made anything recently that you saw on pinterest? If not what is one thing you can do this week? If you need more inspiration search my site for “pinterest” and it will bring up all my posts from the weekends!

Find your simple,

Deb

That’s a brilliant job, congratulations!! I’m sure it will be well-enjoyed.

Thanks for linking up :) And it doesn’t even have to be something crafty – it could be home decorating, organising, or even putting a quote into action!

I could have written this post myself! I caught myself last night saying something in the negative (“I’m not….”) And in that moment, I told myself that was enough. It’s time to let it go and just do it.

On another note – great job on your advent calendar! I have tackled a few things on Pinterest. I have so many more pins to work through though!

Love it Deb!! You did a great job and it must feel good to conquer a fear. You’ve inspired me to try my sewing machine again! I have bought all the fabric I am just too scared to use the machine!

It is sad, but true that seeing you are afraid of your machine makes me feel better. It seems crazy to be so afraid… I plan to fully conquer the machine when my mother gets here as I know she used to sew and will “get” the machine LOL

Well done Deb it look fabulous and I am so proud of you for giving it a go. I love crafting things, and even though sometime they turn out completely crap, I have fun enjoying the process. ;) xx

See that is the beauty in being a more easy going personality – enjoying the process – the trick to that is the letting go that Debbie and I were talking about. It is key to just say – whatever will come of it will be ok, just go through the experience, learn some lessons and see what you make. I have a list a mile long of simple skirts for the girls, fixing zippers, etc I WILL do them! xxx

Deb,
I’m so so so proud of you. You did it. It’s the progress that counts. It is indeed beautiful.

It is indeed the process :) What you learnt along the way, the knowledge that can be shared to your darlings and of course the accomplishment and how proud you must feel to be able to tick it from your to do list.

(I say this because of my latest antics in perfect battle, you know what, I have you to thank to kick starting my positive juju – the girls must be so elated to see a unique advent calendar).

I hope to showcase mine soon…Have yet to get onto the scrapin part, the painting has taken a little longer :P

Great job Deb :) MEGA UBER HUGS

Oh Deb it looks wonderful, well done you!

You really hit the nail on the head for me in this post; I bookmark lots of things and then put off doing them for fear of failure, or more commonly as some other ‘extremely important’ task such as ironing needs to be done… how stupid I am?

Seeing your advent calendar made me think immediately “Oh her children are going to be absolutely delighted that their Mummy made that.”

I now realise that whatever I make, draw, bake, paint etc with my children they think its totally marvellous, I’m not Martha Stewart, I’m Mama… and for them that seems to be enough.

I’m not Martha Stewart – I’m mama – another great slogan to put around where we can see it! I am sure your kids love whatever you do Sarah!

Firstly… most excellent Advent calendar making Deb :) As you know I am a crafty person and you’re doing better than me because I never get around to making one, despite all my best intentions! LOL.

My sister shares some of the trait you’ve mentioned in that she puts off trying anything for fear she won’t be good at it. Me? I’m much more of a just jump in and give it a crack kind of girl (of course if I’m not good at it I will likely get completely obsessed until I BECOME good at it, but that’s a whole other personality trait to write about! ;) ). As I’ve gotten older I am pretty much of the view that there is nothing we can’t do if we put our minds to it. It’s only our fear of failing that stops us from doing anything. I only have to look at my journey in karate to know I what amazing stuff I can accomplish. I never would have expected to be able to consider myself a Martial Artist but I’m knocking on the door of black belt now. We really can do anything if we only let ourselves try!

I’ve got a couple of Christmas baking ideas Pinned on Pinterest so I’m going to attempt to make those nearer the big day for gifts for a few people I’m stuck on.

Love the advent calendar. Made something similar 2 years ago, but with items from the nativity for each pocket to make up the finished scene. It isn’t perfect and I’d never done anything like that before, but I like it (even if DS doesn’t always!!) A good reminder that I need to do a few minor repairs before Thursday!!
