How to blog for new and non techy bloggers

by Debra Dane on January 4, 2012

in Simplify your life 2012

So many of you have decided to participate in the 52 weeks to simplify your life challenge. Many of you took my advice to create a blog to gain the benefit of support and accountability – fantastic. Then you went to create a blog and some of you got stuck – normal and not a problem.

Instead of continuing to answer emails and comments on this I figured I would round up some basic information for those confused by how it all works.

You can sign up for a free blog

There are quite a few places and ways to do this (some I had never heard of) so I figured we would keep it simple for you and stick to the 3 biggies – blogger, wordpress and typepad. I won’t get into pros and cons as I have no experience with any of them (mine is on a self hosted wordpress site and you do not need to go there just for this challenge – make it easy on yourself and just pick one based on a friend’s recommendation or someone else doing the challenge who might comment below). So far I have seen at least 10-12 new blogs from SYL12′ers and they are split between wordpress and blogger and everyone seems to be finding their feet (and already commenting and helping each other!)

You can set up your blog in under 10 minutes

Set up is simple and quick and there are video tutorials to guide you – I found videos best as most of us non techy people (I was when I started) don’t know the terminology so reading directions can be confusing. Some people may find text better – you can google for more help as questions come up.

Here is a step by step tutorial for blogger – follow this and you will be all set.

Here is the sign up for wordpress and they have a full support page with everything you can think of to ask.

Here is a video tutorial for how to post on typepad and add images etc.

How to link up posts for SYL12

Next Monday the first link up will open and blogging participants will add their posts to what is called a “linky”

At the bottom of my post there will be a link up and you will see “add your link”

Click on that button and there will be spaces to enter

  • url (direct link for your blog post): If you don’t know where to find your permalink: click on the title of your post that you are submitting and then copy and paste the url located in your address bar. It will look like www.yourblogname.com/blogposttitlehere (not the address of your main blog page)
  • Name: You can write your blog name, your post title or a description (does not need to be your personal name)
  • Email address: This is in case I need to get in touch and will not be publicly displayed.
  • Click Next step to load it into the linky (at this stage there might be a thumbnail linky which simply means you will have an ability to select a picture to show up with your blog link – from your post or from your computer etc) – we will see how this all plays out next week.

Your post needs to contain a link to this site in some way – either the button or simply a reference to the site in your post like “I am linking up with home life simplified’s SYL challenge” -link the words to www.homelifesimplified.com.au

There will be a new link up each week and you simply take the url of your newest challenge post and enter that information.

How to put the challenge button on your blog and / or post

Basically, a button is something people create so you can share sites and link ups you are involved in and help spread the word or identify yourself as part of a group.

If you look to the right of my posts you see I have one promoting my philosophy (and sign off on every post) of “Find your Simple” and another for the 52 week challenge. Using the challenge one as an example you copy and paste the code that is in the box under the picture

<a href=”http://www.homelifesimplified.com.au” target=”_blank”><img src=” http://www.homelifesimplified.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/homelife_simplified_52weeks_125x125.jpg”>

and paste it into your blog post while in html view/editor or into a text widget / box . When you publish the post the code (the long chain of info) will magically turn into the image!

Other questions / concerns about the challenge answered

You do not have to participate in every challenge – this is a no stress scenario – please make of it what you wish and what works for you. I admit this is unchartered territory as I am designing this from an idea I had and the knowledge I have amassed over the years that has led me to this theory…I believe it is critical to the challenge to at least stick through the first 1-2 months when we do the bulk of the inner work. Then if you skip the money section or relationships because you are good-to-go there, then no worries.

If you complete 36 out of 52 missions you have not failed!

You do not have to blog – comment on the link up post with your results (remember it is not a blog post though so be brief if you want others to read and comment back). I do think the added accountability and support are worth the attempt at setting up a simple blog, but understand the time factor and possible added stress would be too much for some. In that case use Facebook and my blog to interact and comment on other people’s posts to connect further! Another option I saw last night was Kimberley shared a link to a facebook note in a comment on my post. She made it public and that way SYLers can see it and comment there just like on a blog.

You do not have to link up on Monday – the linky will be open Monday to Sunday and then close. If you want to blog on Wednesday link up then or whatever suits your weekly schedule. I will be reading along through the week and there will be others dipping in and out of reading posts so there will be people to read new posts other days.

What about prizes? – well amazingly no one has mentioned this at all so I am going to say now – I expected a few people to join in and I planned to read every – single – post and pick favourite posts to send gifts and prizes as encouragement and acknowledgement. I plan to feature these posts on the blog as “guest/featured posts” with permission. If the group is very large I cannot guarantee that I can manage this so will have to rethink how to do prizes – email me if you have any suggestions or experience hosting a large linky.

Allright then – if you have any more questions post them in the comments and myself and other bloggers (new and old alike) will try to help you out! Up until this week I replied to every single comment on my blog as much as possible (might have missed a few in 5 months). I cannot guarantee I will be able to do that anymore (but may die trying) so please know now – I am not ignoring you if I don’t reply. I read every comment and will forever do that – I may do a few group replies (some people were concerned by the number of reply emails they received when I responded to all the launch post comments – seriously sorry and do know that was a one-off).

Let’s get to it then! I am so excited to have you along this journey with me and appreciate your enthusiasm and openness to a process that is not so clearly defined. One day at a time we will move through 52 weeks and all I can promise right now is that if you participate fully you will not be the same person at the end of this. You will be the person you have been holding inside – that person has been waiting to come out.

Find your simple,

Deb

I love this Deb!! I particularly like what you said at the end about being the person we have been holding inside.. Recently I felt God reveal to me that it isn’t that I am “reinventing” myself so much because how can I reinvent something he made in the first place… its just about digging deep and recognising what beautiful things there are on the inside and accepting that it was always there just waiting to be revealed and unleashed!! Let me at it! :)

Thanks Beck – i agree – many people think they need to change and be a better person but usually what is going on is they are struggling as they try to be the person they think they “should” be, when it comes from within there is less struggle because it is true to you…Then you figure out how to make life work to fit YOU (hence “find your simple”)

I set up a blog last night on wordpress.
My tips are
*If you want to pick a theme, chose from most popular (near the top) – they are popular because they are simple and easy to use. There are hundreds and I picked one I thought looked pretty, but it was very confusing and had to change it after 10 minutes. I figure I can change it later if I need to, but good to just get going.
*If you are writing something in a box, write really briefly the first time. Then go back and edit it. Or highlight and copy it before trying to post or submit it. I lost my writing a couple of times because I clicked on the wrong button! (That was for filling in the ‘about me’ section etc.
*Defo take someone else’s advice on here – don’t fiddle with it all too much, just write. Get your thoughts down, then if you have enough time go back and experiment. I did my first post and my first weeks challenge, then after that went and figured how to put the button on. I thought there is no point spending 2 hours putting a button on and then having nothing written! (And putting the button on took all of 2 minutes actually)!

Hope that might help.

Great help post Deb. Love the community spirit and helpfulness already. Agree with what you mentioned about the KISS method. Agree blogger, wordpress are fantastic tools to get on board with setting up a blog and they’re free.

I will try my hardest to be back and forth with reading all the wonderful blogs and posts. I’m really eager to see how people process their thoughts on the tasks and looking into themselves on such a deeper level. I love it already….

Also Deb, I just want to tell you that you shouldn’t worry about our inbox filling with wonderful news. I think that it’s a great sign of the outpouring of love from connected like minded people. Such a positive way to think about loads of comments. I sincerely hope not to many have been bothered by the inbox love….

Have a great day hun…..xoxoxo

Amz – you were spot on with the inbox thing! I am still getting emails every time someone is in, and i get so excited and happy I could burst! Exactly as you said – a great out pouring of love from a community that will only grow and be connected throughout the year :)

Thanks guys – i know it was just a couple of people who mentioned it but i got worried that others were feeling burdened. I stopped replying to ALL comments but have continued some when i can – there are a LOT – loving all the energy myself as I am exhausted and everyone’s enthusiasm has helped me push through.

Hi Deb, this is a sort of Techno related question. I want to set up a facebook page and I am generally pretty techno savvy but just wondering what you used you created a page. Was it “Cause or Community”?

not sure as i followed someone else’s advice and did mine as a “public person” and then as a “coach” since i was doing personal development, but i think most bloggers are in community? I was in confused land when i began…

Any bloggers with FB pages want to shout out where they put there page on FB?

Giggles, Kisses and Dancing – I’m fairly certain I went the community pathway….can you at all copy the information it’s suggesting….so I can remember :?

I then went personal blog and website for the other selections….hope that helps a tad.

it helps a little… but I don’t know how to connect the blog site to a fb page… it only will allow me to connect it with my personal fb page… something I don’t want people to have access to… think I will leave this in the too hard basket for the moment and just keep on with what I have going.. thankx!!

hmmm I’m having to think here, sorry Beck.

Question: Did you when setting up your fbook and blog use the same email address?

Oh wait I do remember something, you do need over 25 likers/fans before the page can run as a page on it’s own….and then maybe I think you can do what your planning by linking the blog to the page….I could be off track here….there are a few steps involved…..

I have done this…..I’m trying to remember it was 6mths ago and I was in the footholds of OMG – let me think on it some more and hope it comes back or hopefully someone might guide you a bit better….terribly sorry for the memory lapse – late nights and learning on the go….

Been tracking through my history and saved search functions.

I know RSS graffiti can enable you to post to your page and not your personal profile. But I did abandon that process and instead opted to manually ‘share’ blog content to page profile.

Here is another link to a fantastic guide that helped me through. I’ve still not completed the whole list but used the guidance and learnt along the way……Again though, please don’t stress – these little tips along the way will help for sure and are here as you need them. The most important part is just to get the content down. Anyway here is the link…Kelly from @beafunmum constructed this – legend :)

I started my own blog about 4 months ago and although it seemed daunting at first, it really became quite simple! The only thing I fear is that you’ll all become addicted, because I know I have. I’m happy for anyone to msg me through my blog: inspiredbylilfeet.blogspot.com if you have any questions about setting up a blog through blogger. Good luck everyone and thanks Deb for starting such a revolution!

Well Ladies, I made a facebook page. It really wasn’t that hard. I went to “create a page” at the bottom of the page (or you can get to it at the login page) and selected “community or cause”. From there it basically steps you through what you have to do. And I already have my first 2 likers. Yay.

when you are looking at your post in draft form are you in “visual” or “html” – you need to insert the code in the html one… will wait to hear if you are already doing that.

Hi definitely HTML. Hubby is more technical than me, so I have tasked him with looking at it today. Will let you know how we go.

Reply

Debra Dane January 9, 2012 at 7:44 am

when you go to preview the post and don’t see it, try hitting refresh (on the previewed one not the draft one) and see if it comes up – the linky was not showing up in my post last night and when i refreshed it appeared (something i had learned when a giveaway thing had not shown up ages ago so i tried it for this)

Deb, thanks for the helpful hints. The techy stuff I now have a better understanding of, my main hurdle was coming up with a blog name I was happy with

Rachelle, did your hubby work it out for you? I just did mine and realised that the code is a lot longer than it originally appears in the little box – did you copy the whole code? I didn’t the first time – didn’t help I was not in HTML view either!!

that’s good to know if anyone else is still having trouble. just checked out your blog and i love the name and tagline you came up with! Finished is most definitely better than perfect! “Get on with it” is the best anti-perfectionism mantra!

I have just set up a blog for this challenge and have created my first 2 posts. I have no idea what a linky is or where I go from here, but I definitely felt the need to be accountable for this challenge! I tried to give my blog a name, but it seems as though it is e-dolley??? I must have done something wrong? I wanted to call it ‘dance like nobody’s watching’. I really have no idea but willing to learn…
